We Choose Love, music and lyrics by Beth Falcone, was first performed in 2001 in response to 9/11. That version of the song was performed again in 2008 at the Pennsylvania Inaugural Ball in honor of President Barack Obama. In 2016, she rewrote the verses to reflect her feelings about the first election of President Trump, keeping the chorus. After Senator Cory Booker’s extraordinary record-breaking speech, it seems time again to bring this song out to remind us of what we stand for. For Beth, it is a compassionate United States of America, a nation of good, decent people who choose love over greed. No other adjectives matter… conservative, progressive, democrat, republican… How about the party of compassion?

The Kleban Foundation was established in 1988 under the will of Edward L. Kleban, best known as the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning lyricist of the musical A Chorus Line. Kleban’s will made provisions for annual prizes, which in recent years have totaled $100,000 each, payable over two years, to be given to the most promising lyricist and librettist in American musical theatre. For over 30 years, the Kleban Prize has recognized and honored some of the American musical theatre’s brightest developing talents.

"The Kleban Prize for Musical Theatre is one of the theatre's most distinctive honors,” says Tony Award winner Richard Maltby Jr., President of the Kleban Foundation. “After the last few challenging years, Ed Kleban's legacy may be more important than ever in supporting the creators of tomorrow's American musicals. Ed Kleban recognized that theatrical wordsmiths have the hardest time supporting themselves while honing their craft, and so the Kleban awards are specifically for librettists and lyricists. It is notable that the Kleban Prize is not given to a specific work, as other awards are, but instead, it is given for work yet to be written. With a uniquely generous endowment, the Kleban Prize identifies, celebrates and supports promising writing talent in the theatre, just when emerging writers -- and established writers -- need help the most. Kleban Prize winners are going to define the art form for years to come. The Kleban Foundation is proud to carry on Ed Kleban's enlightened legacy.”

  • Beth Falcone is an American pianist, conductor, composer-lyricist, and vocologist. Among numerous awards, she is a Kleban Prize Winner for Most Promising Lyricist in American Musical Theater, Harrington Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement and most recently garnered the award for “best musician” at the United Solo Artists Festival in New York City.

Beth is currently working on a commission from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: Fall Risk: The Musical, the story of an inspiring, gifted young woman who has not only survived but thrived despite her diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis.

Perhaps most known for her musical, Wanda’s World, it premiered Off-Broadway at the 45th St. Theater and received two Lortel Award nominations, including Best Musical, and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Book. The show was released on Broadway Records with album producer Michal J. Moritz, Jr. and is available for licensing through Theatrical Rights Worldwide. Learn more at WandasWorldMusical.com.

Her pitch matching method, designed for those who believe they are tone deaf, is the subject of a research study with Dr. Monica McHenry at New York Medical College. She has given numerous masterclasses around the world and the United States on vocal health, basic vocal anatomy, mechanics and technique. She specializes in classic musical theater and CCM styles (Contemporary Commercial Music).

Ms. Falcone is currently writing a book to help her fellow teachers with those “pitch challenged” students who happen to cross their studio doors. Life’s a Pitch and Then You SPING: A Pitch Tutor’s Toolkit is due to be finished by April of 2024.

Fun fact: She was a music assistant on Broadway’s The Lion King and transcribed Lebo Morake’s music which he created and taught to the cast right in the rehearsal room!
